Thompson, Watson Coleman Congratulate New Coast Guard Commandant as First Ever Female Military Service Chief
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), Chairwoman of the Transportation and Maritime Security Subcommittee, sent a letter to Admiral Linda Fagan to congratulate her on her swearing in as the new United States Coast Guard Commandant and first female ever to lead a branch of our armed forces.
“You take the helm of the Coast Guard at a pivotal moment for our Nation as we combat formidable threats at home and abroad. Under your leadership, the Coast Guard will play a critical role in protecting our national security, economic interests, and democratic values. We look forward to having you testify before us about your plans for the Service soon,” the Chairs wrote.
“By becoming the first female service chief in the history of the United States armed forces, you have shattered an important glass ceiling. Your presence as a leader will show service members everywhere that the top ranks of the U.S. military are no longer reserved solely for men.”
In the letter, Chairs Thompson and Watson Coleman also praised the Commandant for her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as highlighted in her recent confirmation hearing.
“The Coast Guard must ensure that women, people of color, members of the LGBT community, and other minorities are recruited, retained, provided opportunities for advancement, and protected from abuse and discrimination,” the Chairs added. “We appreciate the commitments you have made on these priorities and stand ready to help you fulfill them.”
